So, after the mere trifle of ten and a half years Malcolm's 2002 debut, the album finally got to rotate hypnotically on the world's turntables. about

Malcolm's first solo outing which, certainly around Chemikal Underground's office, quickly became known as '5:14'. The bamboozlingly long, word-association style of the title was met with an arched eyebrow and an "Eh........ok" from us here at the office. When an album's as great as this one was, there seemed to be little point in haggling over the title.

Sombre in tone and sparsely arranged, '5:14...' is a bleakly beautiful piece of work. Emerging as he was from a period of debilitating depression, Malcolm opted for the cathartic approach and poured as much of his mindset into the album as he could, with remarkably poignant and often blackly comic results. The album's closer, "The Devil And The Angel" remains a steadfast live favourite, examining as it does, Malcolm's conversation with a despondent devil on one hand and a sanguine angel on the other...
